Bingle bangle Bungle Bungles
We made our way across the border into WA and suddenly we were in our home state again. It was a super bitter sweet feeling as it’s always nice to be on home turf but it did mean we were coming toward the end of our adventure, and we definitely weren’t ready for it to be over yet!
As we came back into WA, we also turned the clocks back an hour and a half. We had completely forgotten about the time zone change and as we had gained some extra time in our day, we decided to make our way to Lake Argyle on our way to Kununurra. Lake Argyle was massive and an awesome sight to see. It was making us wish we had a boat! We then made our way to the caravan park to take a dip in the famous Lake Argyle infinity pool. We were shocked to see when we got there that the pool was tiny! And there was about 30 people in the pool area waiting for their photo. Definitely a bit of a marketing scam we decided! So we turned around without having a dip and moved on.
On our way out of Lake Argyle, we saw a random pin on Google for some Aboriginal rock art and pulled in to check it out. We climbed up into a cave and saw the most an awesome giant crocodile painted on the wall. So cool!
We spent the night in Kununurra and restocked before heading to the Bungle Bungles.
It was a bit of a drive to get there and the road in was pretty shocking. We got there in the afternoon and went straight to camp. The next morning, we got up at 4am and headed to the Bungle Bungles sight to hike to a lookout for sunrise.
We got there in the dark and as first light appeared, we suddenly saw the bungle bungles for the first time all around us. They were so much bigger and there were so many more than we expected! It was an awesome awesome sight.
We hiked further up into the bungle bungles then went to the famous Cathedral Gorge which we somehow got all to ourselves.
We then drove to the northern section of the national park to be at Echidna Chasm for midday, hoping to see the chasm light up with the midday sun. We hiked in and waited at the end of the Chasm for the sun. The chasm was awesome but we decided it wasnt too worth it to wait around for it to light up as it looked just as good in the dark.
We then headed to a different area to do the Mini Palms hike. This was a tough but epic hike up a gorge full of palm trees.
It was a massive day of hiking in the heat to we headed to the visitor centre for an icy pole then headed back to camp. The next morning we were up early and out of there back to Kununurra.
We’d heard the Bungle Bungle road was worse that the Gibb and we definitely didn’t come out unscathed. Both latches for our rooftop tent snapped while travelling on the corrugations and we had to zip tie it shut.
We ended up grabbing some tie wire in Kununurra and cut up our bbq chicken grilled to fashion up some new latches. Hopefully these last until Perth!
It was a quick trip but the Bungle Bungles were spectacular! They far exceeded our expectations and were a true wonder. After grabbing a few more supplies in Kununurra, we are now off to tackle the Gibb River Road!
