Mud crabs and bush cars

We checked out Derby, headed to Broome for some errands and then started driving up the Dampier Peninsula. We were about three quarters of the way up when we noticed the car driving funny and immediately pull over.

The tyre we had plugged on the gibb had gotten another hole and this time the side wall had blown out. It couldn’t have lasted a couple more days until we had the tyres booked in to be changed!! Ah well this time there was no plugging that would save it so we took it off and put on the spare. We were suddenly feeling very vulnerable without a spare tyre and prayed that the other rear tyre didn’t decide to go as well.

Well we made it to Lombadina with no other dramas and were greeted by a beautiful sunset over a top tier campsite (the camp kitchen even had a big screen! Shocked more sites up here don’t do that). Hannah, Joe and their friend Liv were up here as well which was awesome as we didn’t think we’d see them again until Perth.

The next morning we were all doing a kayak and snorkel tour. Our guide Bud took us out to a river and we rode the tide out to the snorkel spot. It was a great little snorkel and we saw heaps of rays and cool small creatures. Bud then had us riding the tide back in where we saw turtles, sharks, schools of mullet and jumping eagle rays! A great experience.

In the afternoon we did a tour of Lombadina and learnt of the mission days and the progression to how the community functions in the current day.

That evening, one of the locals that Hannah, Joe and Liv met rocked up in his bush car to take us out to a cool sunset spot on the beach. We all hopped in the tray and took a burn out to the beach. It was great fun. We watched the sunset all together with a couple of beers and a good yarn.

The next day we were out again with Bud on a mud crabbing tour. It was so sick to be wandering the mangroves and pulling mud crabs out of holes. We ended up with six massive mud crabs that we cooked up back at camp over the fire. They were delicious!

The next day Hannah, Joe and Liv were leaving. We gave Winston a card we had all made to thank him for taking us out to the beach and Hannah gave him a hat she had made. We then headed to Cygnet Bay Pearl farm together and Ardyaloon. Rein caught a squid off the rocks and we all went for a swim in the crystal clear water before saying goodbye to Joe, Hannah and Liv.

We had one more night in Lombadina before heading to Smithy’s for another two nights.

We had an awesome time on the Dampier peninsula and Lombadina especially was a massive highlight of the trip.

The next few days we were in Broome running errands, getting our tyres changed and car serviced. It was good to slow down as I managed to finish the hat I had been crocheting for Rein. We also checked out Malcom Douglas’ Croc Park which was LOOSE and went to the outdoor cinemas to see Spider-Man.

Next we are headed to Coral Bay to go scuba diving! I’m so pumped!
